The Banner and Flag Collection

The museum’s Banner & Flag Collection has grown over the years and now contains a wide assortment of valuable old banners and flags. The basis of the collection is provided by national and military flags preserved for centuries in armouries, churches and council chambers, as well as a number of banners once taken as booty. The aim is to put together and maintain a collection of military, ecclesiastic and secular flags and banners to provide posterity with as much information as possible. This is not always an easy undertaking, given that the fabric of some of the items is very old and fragile, and thus calls for great care in its storage and maintenance. More
